June 12, 1898 is the day when our country tasted its own freedom from the Spanish Colonization. Every year, all Filipinos are gathering together to celebrate this special holiday occasion. Since it is a national holiday, government offices are closed including business establishment except shopping centers. While, public transport such as buses, passenger jeeps, and tricycle still operate but their routes may be limited because of the parades.

President Diosdado Macapagal signed the Republic Act No. 4166 regarding this matter on August 04, 1964. Republic Act No. 4166 is an act changing the date of the Philippines Independence Day from July four to June twelve. This Act legalized the holiday, which is based on the Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 by General Emilio Aguinaldo and Filipino revolutionary forces from the Spanish colonization. During this time, the Philippines’ flag was raised and our national anthem played for the first time. However, our freedom was only temporary because Spain and the United States did not recognize the declaration.

Spain colonized our country for more than three hundred years because Philippines are rich in natural resources. And they are the reason why Filipinos experienced a bunch of hardships, hardness, difficulties, and more throughout their colonization.

Filipinos situation then was very hard, mainly because they are being controlled, forced, and required to do things they don’t actually want to do by the Spaniards. They are treated like a slaves in their very own country. In fact, it is more than slavery. They just hid in the dark and cry their heart out, considering the fact that they have no right to protest, complaint, and question the wrong doings of the Spaniards. I felt very bad for what they have been through.

That is the reason why I am very honored to our national heroes for being persistent, patient, and determined to fought for our rights and set our country free by the hands of our enemy. June 12, 1898 will always serve as a special day for us Filipinos, because we will always remember how we fought for country, and for our freedom.
